What Are Pearls?

• Pearls are unique gemstones that originate from living creatures—specifically mollusks like oysters and mussels. These precious jewels have been adored since ancient times.
  
• The process begins when a mollusk produces layers of nacre (pronounced NAY-kur) around an irritant inside its shell. In natural pearls, the irritant may be another organism from the water. In cultured pearls, a mother-of-pearl bead or tissue is inserted by humans to initiate the process.
  
• The quality of the nacre determines the pearl’s luster (shine), which significantly impacts its beauty and value. A smooth surface and various shapes—round, oval, pear-shaped, or even misshapen (called baroque pearls)—add to their allure.
  

Types of Pearls:

Natural Pearls:

Extremely rare and historically found in the Persian Gulf, natural pearls are costly and hard to come by today.

Cultured Pearls:

Grown in pearl farms, these pearls are more common.

Mollusks are raised until they can accept a mother-of-pearl bead nucleus. A delicate surgical procedure implants the bead, and the mollusks return to the water to form the pearl.

Sorting through thousands of pearls, only a beautifully matched strand is assembled.

Saltwater Pearls:

Akoya Cultured Pearls: Grown in Japanese and Chinese waters, they range from tiny (2mm) to rare (10mm) and are usually white or cream.

South Sea Pearls: The largest pearls, produced in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, range from 9mm to 20mm and come in white, cream, or golden hues.

Tahitian Pearls: Grown in French Polynesia (including Tahiti), they exhibit intriguing colors and sizes.

Pearl Necklace Lengths:
